This page is dedicated to one of my other passions other than Athletics, which is design & illustration.

Since graduating from the University of Central England (now Birmingham City University) in 1995 I have worked in both the Graphic Design and Signage industries, as well as working freelance as a Portrait artist and Illustrator. This page shows some examples of my work ranging from poster/ signage & 'Chalk Board' work through to more technical illustrative work and portrature, and even model making and stained glass window design...

Chalk Boards... Here are a few examples of chalk boards I have produced for various high street shops, cafes and festival's....''They are a great way to advertise 'special offers' to potential customers by placing the boards outside the shop premises, and so attracting more custom to your shop or business.''

The brightly coloured signs attract the eye of potential customers, and can either be drawn straight onto a chalk board sign, or onto display mount board for insertion into a display 'A-Frame' sign for either indoor or outdoor use...

Product, Package & Logo Design... An integral part of graphic design can be the design of packaging for various products and their logo's. Here are some examples of my designs...

A range of 'creepy crawley' killers. The bold bright packaging reflects the nuisence insect's colour and atracts the buyers eye on the shop shelf.

Below is a childs bathroom and toiletry product holder...''Wash Time Warrior'' was designed to help make bathing and teeth cleaning time more attractive to children, and in particular little boys who didn't enjoy 'washtime'!!

The logo, product and packaging for ''Wash Time Warrior'' was all designed and illustrated by myself whilst studying at University.

Below is an idea for a new women's perfume advertisment which would typically appear in a fashion magazine for example. I have used 'pointilism' or a dotted technique to illustrate the model.

Illustration... Here are a few examples of the many illustrations I have produced whilst working as an illustrator and graphic designer.

Black & white technical illustration has always been a favourite style and technique I have used to illustrate many subjects.

'Illuminated Letter's' can be a good mix of illustration and technical ability, and can be used for a variety of design's...

3D and model making... As a designer and illustrator, I have also aquired some interesting 3D projects as well as stained glass window design work. Here are a few examples...

Left is a 3D model produced for 'Naturewatch'. It is entirely produced from card, delicatly cut by scalpel...

Again, shown right is a card cutout model of a Kingfisher, which was again all cut by hand.

Left is an idea for a stained glass window, which is a mock-up produced from card, accetate and fine coloured paper to produce the clients final design.

Poster Design... A couple of examples of my poster design work used for exhibitions and advertisments in London and on T.V...

Portraits and Canvasses... Working as a portrait artist I produced many portraits and caricatures... Here are just a few examples of my work...Being an athlete myself helped get commissions for my work with fellow athletes and their relatives wanting portraits of either themselves or family members producing for special occasions etc...

Family members are always a popular choice for commissions...as are sports people, such as Mo Farah, the World 5000m champion long distance athlete illustrated below.

Champion Fell runner Tim Davies is illustrated left, whilst winning the famous Snowdon Mountain race...and below, a painting produced on canvas depicting the famous Rivington Pike and Tower near Bolton in Lancashire...

Cartoons... Finally, cartoon styles are frequently used by all sorts of businesses & large companies. I produced this group of characters for the large 'Managment development, coaching & training company' 'Brefi' to show situations that occur in the workplace such as conflict resolution, problem solving and bullying etc which they wanted illustrated in comic form.

The 'Brefi' group chose this character from a range I had produced for their website images, and for managment coaching seminars to 'lighten' the mood of more serious situations that can occur in the workplace...

Digital Illustration... My latest illustrations have been created using a digital drawing pad and pen. Digital illustration creates a sharpness and vibrancy that is unique and supirior to hand drawn and painted illustrative styles. Here are a few examples of the crisp and colourful cartoon styles that can be created with a digital pen.

And finally, you must take a look at Nick Oldham's great illustrative and portrait work which you may have already seen advertised in Athletics Weekly. His professional work commemorates the best of British Athletics, and now most recently the best of Britains G.B Athletics team at London 2012.
